Sears Art Museum
The Sears Art Museum, in partnership with the University of Utah, opened its doors on November 20th 2004. The museum is located at 155 N University Ave, St. George, UT 84770. The museum initially began with the donation of over 1,000 works of art from the founder of Sears Roebuck and Co., Oliver M. K. Douglas. Since beginning operations, however, the museum has expanded to include a number of other pieces including those that have been donated by individuals and organizations. The museum is located on approximately 42 acres of land in downtown St George Utah near both Bonneville Salt Flats and Red Fleet State Park. The Sears Art Museum was first established as a private institution under the name “The Douglas House” within the grounds of what was once an artesian well fed hotel called the ‘Bungalow’. After moving into a new building within city limits in 1978, it was then renamed to its current title which pays tribute to Mr Douglas who founded his namesake company back in 1893. The Sears Art Museum is one of the oldest art museums in the United States. The museum was originally established as The Douglas House in 1888. The house was later moved to a location within city limits in 1930.The Sears Art Museum was originally established by Mr Oliver M. K. Douglas who is the founder of the Sears Roebuck and Company.
